I asked Mom if she wanted to run down to Crosley to check to see if we could spot an eagle. Off we went! We saw some turtles on a log and a lovely little pond, but no eagle.
Back in the car Mom mentioned that a friend of hers sees eagles “all the time down at her place.” So we headed South toward Graham Creek. We stopped in at Stream Cliff Farm to say “Hey!” to our friends there. When we told Lauren that we were out looking for eagles and did she ever see any, she answered, “Of course! All the time! But have you ever seen the rookery?” I replied, “Have I ever seen the What?” “The rookery,” she replied with a grin. “Come down some day around 3:30, and I’ll take you there!”
I looked at my phone. It read 3:27! Lauren laughed and told me to get the car, and she would ride with us.
As we approached her home, She asked if I minded driving through a field. “Well, no! Not if we can make it!” We drove in the drive and past the fenced in pasture, and the adventure began!

Across the farm field, following a faint set of tire tracks until we were at the edge of the woods near Graham Creek. We got out of our car and looked around curiously. Suddenly, Lauren clapped her hands. “Look there!” she said pointing. Rising from trees down around the creek were at least a dozen Great Blue Herons. I shot a choppy video which is included in an accompanying blog post.
We watched the herons coming and going and checked out their huge nests high in trees and decided we could definitely understand why they would want to live there! Our friend acknowledged the blessed life she has been able to share with her husband on the one-of-a-kind rolling farm land of beautiful southern Jennings County. We felt the blessing of being her friends and being given the opportunity to share what we had just seen.
A rookery! I didn’t even know it should have been on my bucket list!😂
