Her-story

My mother is a journaler. Lining the shelves in the library is her treasure trove of journals.

The first bound journal is dated 1978. The latest journal is sitting beside her chair to chronicle the happenings of the day.

If someone read back through the journals from the start, what would be revealed is a life well-lived. Words of grace and humor and faith. Words that inspire and cajole and encourage. And my mother’s favorite self-description—“exhortation!”

Also on the bookshelves is a collection of photo albums. A blow-by-blow account of the building of and maintaining of a little slice of heaven on earth. These little books are a reminder that if you’re not sure what to do to bring value to those around you, go plant some flowers 🌸 or try something artistic.

Life is full of ups and downs, and it requires perseverance, but I think each one of us can decide to make the intentional decision to try to bring something positive and good to every day we live. Even if it’s as simple as a kind word to the cashier at the store, or the restaurant employee, or that co-worker who looks beleaguered. Or call a family member just to chat.

What are you leaving behind? What would the journals of your life reveal?
